I'm trying to get ZynAddSubFX to work inside Rosegarden
but the (aka) ZASF-dssi is absent so it's a no-go. Neither
slackpkg nor slkpkg offer any clues as to where the distro's
libzynaddsubfx_dssi package could be found (and hopefully
installed). On most other distros the dssi is either a
standalone package or part of the Zyn package or yet just
plain bundled with Rosegarden. I have the Zyn package
installed and according to some pages the dssi should be
in it but RG doesn't show it! What conflicts might arise
if I manage to find the developer's Zyn tarball and compile
it in hopes of getting ITS dssi installed as well? What's
the situation with Slackware? Thanks.

I haven't tried it myself, but a quick search at google found:

http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/zynaddsubfx/
and

Both zynaddsubfx and dssi are installed, I even installed zynjacku
although I don't think I need it. I also remember vaguely that some apps
need to be installed BEFORE ones needing them; done that too by deleting
and reinstalling rosegarden. But Rosegarden will not show the ZASF or
ZynAddSubFX (as it may be called) dssi in the synth dropdown list.

One strange detail is that when I launch the standalone ZynAdSubFX synth
I get this error:

"Default IO did not initialize. Defaulting to NULL backend"

As far as I can figure since this is NOT
the dssi any problem it has is unrelated.

That usually applies when compiling packages from source. Packages
installed from slackbuilds.org are usually compiled from source.

Tha packages from Alien are prebuilt for good and bad. I prefer to build
my packages from source.

Another thing to consider is that if a package has a dependency on
another package things might get messy if those packages come frome
different providers.

Myself, I only use the multilib and compat32 packages from Alien and
slackbuilds.org for other third party packages. If something is missing
from slackbuilds.org I build it from source myself and usually use
makepkg to create my own package.

Thanks very much. Alas all I want is guitar sessions
and while not alone 'package building' is really
terminally over my head :-)

I just resolved a major years-old issue with rosegarden
but while it felt good to be clear of it the sad fact
is that I spent many an evening busting my balls with
the tools instead of the music.

Still, if anyone can point out exactly WHY the zyn
dssi is failing to list in Rosegarden, and how to
fix it ..I'm all ears.

If you are unable to find any help here in good old
alt.os.linux.slackware you might find more readers in the web forum
https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/

If is sad that usenet news has lost many of its old users and not many
new users find their ways to here. I really prefer usenet news to web
forums, but there is a lot more traffic at linuxquestions.

I appreciate the technically faultless advice from you as well as from
Henrik; I am a member of many web-based forums, may the force be with
you both. Unfortunately or fortunately two factors are shaping my
associated behavior these last-minute autumn days, the first one is that
I barely have time to muck with music, the second one is that precisely
because usenet is under relentless attack by the race of googlegoons
that I try to prioritize it :-)

You're welcome (I think?). But technically, I didn't really give
any advice, I was just echoing Henrik's preference for Usenet.

So do I - it's called an adblocker and works a treat. UBlock Origin, if
you are interested.

but then I go to the weather site and it masks the view if I block their ads

I'd like to see a short row of toggle buttons ending the otherwise
quintessential full menu-bar

Add-Block (on-off)
Visibility (open-louveredstealth-shuttered-dark-blackhole)

I respectfully disagree; perhaps you have an adblocker also. To quote

Yes, you are right. When I tried to log out I got a noticable number of
ads.

I actually don't have THAT big a problem with ads, even raised to google
the possibility of ads-preferences, a direction in which amazon is
drifting. The last months I've been particularly interested in diesel
engines, parts, and cheap work gloves so I would have looked at any that
cought my eye. What I do NOT want to be bombarded with are "meet lonely
seniors in your home town" where I happen to know everyone :-)

Thanks.
Maybe

I went that route also and installed with

# upgradepkg --install-new dssi-1.1.1-x86_64-1alien.tgz

removed and reinstalled rosegarden, rebopoted but
it's still not showing up in rosegarden, OTHERS do:

Fluidsynth dssi plugin
Less trivial synth
Trivial Synth
Xsynth dssi plugin
Simple Carplus
Simple Mono
Simple Stereo

Question:
Why would one need a 3rd party package for something as
rudimentary as a dssi kit that already exists in the distro
(15.0 BTW) anyway?
