Slackware 15.0 has been alpha for 8 months now. Is it normal for
a new Slackware version to stay alpha that long?

It's now RC1. It was a Alpha1 for less than 2 months, but I have no idea
how long it takes.

I think it depends, I suspect there are still odd
issues with all the new changes, which are quite
significant compared to 14.2.
